The Power of Belief in Creating Lasting Change
We all know the feeling of wanting to change—whether it’s breaking an old pattern, creating healthier habits, or stepping into a bigger version of ourselves. Yet many of us get stuck in the gap between intention and action. What sits in that gap?
One of the biggest drivers is belief.
What is a belief?
A belief is simply a thought we’ve repeated enough times—or accepted strongly enough—that it feels like truth. Beliefs are mental shortcuts, shaping how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Some empower us (“I am capable of learning new skills”), while others limit us (“I’ll never be good at that”).
Beliefs form the invisible architecture of our self-concept. They influence what we pay attention to, how we interpret experiences, and even the goals we think are possible for us.
Belief and the Self-Concept Model
The Self-Concept Model tells us that our identity is made up of the stories we hold about who we are. These stories are built on layers of beliefs.
- Core Beliefs: deeply held ideas about ourselves (“I am worthy” or “I am not enough”).
- Intermediate Beliefs: rules and assumptions we live by (“If I work harder than everyone else, then I’ll be valued”).
- Surface Beliefs: everyday thoughts that reinforce the deeper layers (“I messed up that presentation, so I must not be cut out for leadership”).
When we try to make change without shifting the beliefs underpinning our self-concept, it feels like pushing against gravity. But when we align our beliefs with who we want to become, change becomes more natural, even inevitable.
Can beliefs be changed?
Yes—and neuroscience backs this up. Our brains are plastic, meaning they can form new connections and dissolve old ones. With the right tools, we can rewire limiting beliefs into empowering ones.
This is where Unconscious Coaching comes in.
Unconscious Coaching is the approach I use with clients to go beyond surface-level mindset work. It integrates:
- Hypnosis to quiet the overthinking mind and imprint new beliefs at a subconscious level.
- Havening to release old emotional imprints that keep limiting beliefs locked in.
- NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) to reframe unhelpful patterns and create new ways of thinking and being.
By weaving these methods together, we work directly with both the mind and body to shift your self-concept. It’s not about forcing change—it’s about creating an internal environment where new beliefs don’t just sound good, they feel true.
Why belief matters for change
If you believe “I am someone who can change,” you’re far more likely to take aligned action, stay committed, and recover quickly from setbacks. Conversely, if you hold the belief “I always fail at change,” your actions will unconsciously reinforce that identity.
Transformation starts with belief because belief shapes identity, and identity drives behavior.
A reflection for you
Take a moment to consider:
- What’s one change you’d love to create in your life right now?
- What belief about yourself might be standing in the way?
- And most importantly—what new belief would make that change feel natural?
If you’re ready to shift the beliefs holding you back and create lasting change, this is the work I love to do. Through Unconscious Coaching, we align your self-concept with the life you want to live—so transformation doesn’t feel forced, it feels inevitable.
